Is it possible to increase Maybank transfer limits?

Maybank does not give guidance on how to increase transfer limits, where limits are applied for security reasons. However, if you need to send a high value payment which exceeds the online payment options, you can still visit a branch to do so.

How to increase Maybank transfer limits

Visit a branch of Maybank, or a Maybank forex kiosk, to send a high value payment. You can find the list of locations on the Maybank website or in their app.

How to send high amount transfers with Maybank

You can send payments online through Maybank2U or in a branch. If you’re sending 49,000 MYR or less in a day, you can send it online. If not, you’ll need to visit a Maybank branch where you’ll be guided through the process by a member of the service team.

Here’s how to send a payment with Maybank using Maybank2U:

  1. Log into Maybank’s online banking service

  2. Select Pay and transfer and then Transfer

  3. Select the account to transfer from and to

  4. Enter the currency and amount of payment

  5. Click Foreign telegraphic transfer to see the fee and exchange rate

  6. Follow the online prompts to enter all the required information

  7. Confirm your payment, and you’re done

Maybank large transfer fees

Maybank offers a few different ways to send payments overseas. However, if you’re sending a higher value payment you’ll probably need to select a foreign telegraphic transfer, which you can arrange online or in the Maybank2U app.

There’s a fee to pay when you send money overseas, which can vary depending on the way you send your foreign telegraphic transfer. Here’s a summary:

Payment detailMaybank fee

Payment sent  in a branch

Payments to Singapore in SGD - MYR 10-15 + commission fee of MYR2 for payments of under MYR5,000

All other payments - MYR 30

Aside from this transfer fee, there’s likely to be a variable markup added to the exchange rate. This is a percentage fee which is added to the exchange rate used to convert your ringgit to the currency you need for deposit in the recipient’s account.

Additional fees may be deducted from your payment as a result of the SWIFT payment network. You can avoid this by selecting a Guaranteed OUR (G’OUR) payment online or at a Maybank branch. In this case, you pay an additional fee to ensure your recipient doesn’t pay SWIFT costs.

Maybank exchange rate for international transfers

The exchange rate offered by Maybank is likely to include a markup on the mid-market rate. The mid-market rate is the one you’ll see for your currency on a currency converter tool. To see the markup - which is a fee - for your specific currency, you’ll need to compare the rate you see in a currency converter tool, against the Maybank rate which you can find on Maybank2U.

Bank exchange rate margins can be around 3%. This percentage charge quickly mounts up when higher value payments are involved. Here’s how the exchange rate markup builds up with a 3% margin used for different transfer values:

  • Sending 1,000 MYR - the exchange rate markup adds 30 MYR to the total

  • Sending 5,000 MYR- the exchange rate markup adds 150 MYR to the total

  • Sending 50,000 MYR - the exchange rate markup adds 1,500 MYR to the total

It’s helpful to know that Maybank may offer discounted markups on some payments over 10,000 MYR, made online and in app. Discounts vary depending on the type of Maybank account you hold.

Maybank customer support for high amount transfers

To get support with your Maybank international transfer you can always call into a branch or visit a Maybank foreign exchange kiosk. Staff there can answer your questions and help you navigate the process.

As an alternative, you can also get in touch with Maybank using these methods:

  • Open a secure chat in the Maybank2U app

  • Complete the online contact form on the Maybank website

  • Call Maybank on 1 300 88 6688

  • Email Maybank on [email protected]

Conclusion: Does Maybank have transfer limits?

Yes. Maybank offers several different ways to transfer money abroad, which each have their own limits. Some services, such as payments made through Maybank’s partnership with Western Union, can have a fairly low daily limit. Sending money online from your Maybank account will usually mean a limit of 49,999 MYR a day, while there’s no limit if you want to send money in a branch. These limits are fairly typical of Malaysian banks, although our research did show that some, such as HSBC, do offer higher online limits for established customers.

If you’d prefer to send your payment using an intuitive app or web service, compare the options with Maybank against non-bank solutions such as Wise. You can send money to 160+ countries, with the mid-market rate and low fees, with no need to visit a branch.
